Now in their 68th year, The Ivor Awards recognise and celebrate the very best in songwriting and composing for screen.

Alumna Florence Welch (Spurgeon’s 2005) of Florence + The Machine was awarded Best Song Musically and Lyrically for King from the group’s most recent album, Dance Fever, written by Florence Welch and Jack Antonoff. The song discusses Welch’s conflict in choosing between her career and starting a family as well as gender expectations for women in society.

And alumnus Jack Peñate (Spurgeon's 2003), alongside Dean “Inflo” Josiah Cover, Jamar McNaughton and Cleopatra Nikolic received Best Album for 11 by SAULT. Drawing from Afrobeat and blues influences, 11 was one of five critically acclaimed albums released for free simultaneously by SAULT in November 2022.

Congratulations to you both on these very well-deserved awards!
