National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

The NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool. Training and assessment for the NPLQ are in three sections, and candidates must successfully pass all to attain the qualification.

Course Prerequisites

  • Candidates must be 16 years of age prior to assessment.
  • Complete a minimum of 36 contact hours of theory and practical training prior to assessment.
  • Complete exercises in “The Lifeguard” manual.
  • Jump/dive into deep water.
  • Be able to swim 50m in no more than 60 seconds at the start of the course.
  • Swim 100m continuously on front and back.
  • In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds.
  • Surface dive to the floor in the deepest part of the pool (it may be appropriate to seek medical advice with regard to reaching the bottom of the pool which is greater than 1.5m).
  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits.
