In a joint competition with Chia Chi School in Taiwan, pupils were instructed to take photos of things that inspired them for the future, and which they think will make a difference to global and local communities.
Recently, the Eco Committee at Alleyn's chose the winning entries, which were then presented to the pupils at Chia Chi School in Taiwan in a video call.
Here are a few of the winning entries below
I took this photo while on holiday in Mauritius. We were on a scuba diving expedition when the dive masters caught sight of humpback whales. They came right up to the boat; it was a family of three. In the photo, you can see the tail of the baby. This is really good for the planet because the whale population is growing. In fact, there were an estimated 600 whales around the island because it is a safe place for whales to be with their young. Whales play a vital role in helping combat climate change and provide up to 50% of our oxygen. This is important to me because whales are not only essential for our planet but also impressive and beautiful creatures.
This photo is from a nature reserve I visited in the Pyrenees, France, during the holidays. Nature reserves offer a safe and protected habitat for plants and animals, while also preserving areas of habitat and the wildlife that resides there. Nature reserves are becoming increasingly important due to the effects of climate change and the threats to animal habitats, such as wildfires. They also contribute to maintaining biodiversity by safeguarding endangered species. This is important to me because I believe in protecting the natural world from the dangers of climate change, primarily caused by human activities, especially global warming.
This is a picture from the top of one of the chimneys of Battersea Power Station. The power station stopped operating in 1983 but, as part of an urban regeneration scheme, it has been repurposed as a shopping center and tourist attraction. This building has transformed from a derelict, fossil fuel-burning power station into the heart of a thriving community where people shop, work, and live. This is inspiring because it demonstrates that even the most rundown areas can become beautiful.
