We were delighted to welcome star of film and TV, Julian Glover CBE (Roper's 1952), back to Alleyn’s to give the latest Ideas@Alleyn’s talk on Monday 2 October.

The evening saw Julian, whose illustrious career has included roles in Bond, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter franchises, as well as TV roles in Doctor Who and Game of Thrones among others, in conversation with Alleyn’s Head of Film Studies Mr. Mark Grogan as part of our celebration of 25 years of Media and Film Studies at Alleyn’s.

In his fascinating talk, Julian took a Great Hall audience on a journey through his career spanning eight decades and pinpointed Alleyn’s as the starting point, with his first ever role as Mark Antony in Julius Caesar on the school field. Following school, Julian trained at RADA, performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and became a familiar face on British TV in the 1960s and 1970s. His talent for accents and cold expressions made him an ideal choice for playing refined villains.

Julian discussed notable roles and told enthralling stories, including of having to make up a back-story for his character in Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and keeping the mask from the final scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which his wife Isla, who was in the audience, made him throw away! He also talked about his role as the voice of the giant spider Aragog in the film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets despite being deathly scared of spiders! And he talked about his most recent role in Tár, acting alongside Cate Blanchett.

Thank you, Julian, for regaling us with fascinating tales of your career and for your continued support of Alleyn’s. It was a delight to have you back!

Book now for the next Ideas@Alleyn’s on Thursday 9 November when we will hear from Oscar-winning Director Orlando Von Einsel (Dutton's 1998) about his career:
