On Thursday 4th May, Stephen Bailey-Smith (Senior Economist/Investment Strategist at Global Evolution) gave an informal and informative Economics talk and Q&A to our Upper School students. An Alumnus of the University of Sussex and SOAS (University of London), during his studies Stephen developed an interest in investments and the ethics of aid. Travelling also played a role in his professional career path.

The discussion was wide ranging. Our students were invited to consider the perspectives and questions held by different stakeholders, for example policy makers who must contend with questions like, “How do governments create wealth?” and “How could or should wealth be redistributed?”. Other issues addressed included how political parties approach economic development, growth and aid.

The socio-economic context and histories of various countries and regions were discussed including the UK, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Argentina, France, the West African bloc and the Central African bloc.

The Q&A segment was full of interesting questions, notably “How can an investor differentiate between making an investment in a country where you can make a difference or where you can make a good investment/profit?”

We are proud of our students for bringing a spirit of curiosity to the session and contributing an array of interesting questions for our generous speaker.
