Year 12 scientists had a fascinating exploration into the world of phenomenal physics on Thursday, 16 March as part of British Science Week.
Physics in Action was a day-long event at the Emmanuel Centre in London. Packed with inspiration, challenge and experimentation across the breadth of physics, Alleyn’s Physics students were treated to lots of interactivity throughout the day and talks from five British scientists, working at the top of their field.
The fascinating series of talks included learning more about astrobiology and the upcoming missions to look for life on Mars as well as the possibility of life on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and the search for signs of life on distant planets. They also learnt more about what changes society needs to make to reach net-zero as well as insight into fusion energy and what the future of energy will look like.
Dr Lee J Moore, Alleyn’s Chair of Science, said:
“The Physics in Action day was truly inspiring. We learned about a huge variety of different aspects of applied Physics, and it was so powerful for the students to see just how much versatility that the study of Physics can offer when it comes to solving the interdisciplinary problems of the future.”
Luca in Year 12 said:
“It was very interesting, and really good to see our lessons put into perspective and how to use them the real world. I also enjoyed the learning about different applications of Physics.”
Isabel in Year 12 said:
“Today was an insight into how truly interdisciplinary the sciences are and the impact they will have on the future.”
Charlotte in Year 12 said:
“It was so much fun and really interesting. Learning more about nuclear fusion from an expert in her field was so inspiring, and it was great to learn more about careers linked to Physics.”
