Alleyn's alumna Nancy Carroll (Brading's 1992) has joined the theatre production of Jordan Harrison's award-winning science fiction play Marjorie Prime.
Running at The Menier Chocolate Factory from 3 March to 6 May 2023, the show tells the story of 85-year-old Marjorie, whose strange new companion is able to recall her life story for her, and explores "the mysteries of human identity". Nancy stars as Tess, Marjorie's daughter, who hires a service designed to assist Marjorie with her symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
Nancy originally studied Fine Art for 5 years before going to LAMDA to train as an actor. She has long impressive list of TV, radio, film and theatre credits, including After the Dance at The National Theatre, for which she received an Oliver Award and an Evening Standard Award for Best Actress.
Nancy was the guest speaker for Alleyn's Speech Day 2020 (the School's first live-streamed Speech Day in response to Covid restrictions), contributing a compelling video message in which she explored the nature of success ("being true to yourself and listening to your instincts"), expounded the "joy in learning and having a go" that she experienced during her time at Alleyn's, and summed up by telling all pupils: "I applaud you".
Writer Jordan Harrison was a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist in Drama for Marjorie Prime, with the awards body calling it "A sly and surprising work about technology and artificial intelligence told through images and ideas that resonate".
The film version premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and won the Sloan Feature Film Prize for its "imaginative and nuanced depiction of the evolving relationship between humans and technology".
