Private View held on 17 January 2023

Since September, all Year 9 art students have been investigating the theme of Spaces of Transformation, inspired by the work of a range of artists, architects and designers. They have all experimented across a wide variety of mixed-media 2d and 3d approaches, playing with different materials and processes, and the use of form, structure, texture and colour.

The art Teachers have all interpreted the theme in different ways, so each class has explored diverse ways of responding to it, hence the variety of works on display. In addition, art students are always encouraged to create works with a sense of individuality and personality which is evident here.

It has been exciting to see the energetic buzz of year 9 artists in the studios in recent weeks and their commitment to refining and finishing their work in time for this exhibition. The three-dimensional models have a great sense of playfulness in the handling of materials, producing dynamic visual statements. Unlike a pre-planned, design led approach, most works have been constructed from within the fine arts sphere, and have been made with a more DIY aesthetic, working intuitively and adopting a process led approach, embodying the philosophy of ‘thinking through making’. Whilst they have a strong sculptural presence in their own right, it is also thrilling to consider their potential as prototypes for pavilions, schools, houses, set designs or other design possibilities.

With sustainable design now imperative for the survival of the planet, the ability to think and act creatively to transform and reimagine our spaces becomes even more pertinent. What do we want our cities to look like ? How do we want to inhabit them? These are some of the big and universal questions that face every generation. When looking at the work in this exhibition, the fun, freedom, and imagination on display offers a sense of hope and optimism.
