On Tuesday 17 January, Alleyn’s launched a brand-new Digital Academy to bring tech entrepreneurship into the lives of Alleyn’s pupils and children in our local community who don’t have access to this specialist learning.

The exciting new after-school club kicks off with weekly sessions for 20 Year 8 and 9 Alleyn’s pupils and 20 pupils from local partner schools, Trinity Academy and The Charter School East Dulwich.

Assistant Head (Head of the Digital Academy and Leadership Development) Rob Atkinson, said:

"We are very excited to launch the digital academy project which represents our first steps towards our vision to bring coding, enterprise and tech entrepreneurship more directly into the lives of our pupils and the lives of children beyond our school community who don’t have access to this kind of specialist learning in their day to day lives.

“It is clear that the world of work will look very different for the next generation and digital confidence and literacy will prove essential skills for them, as well as a willingness to work together to identify and solve problems - all skills we are looking to promote!"

Through the sessions, pupils will collaborate with one another and get to grips with current software, platforms and techniques to help them gain confidence and equip them with some of the key skills required for digital entrepreneurship.

During the ten-week course pupils will cover two blocks of learning and receive a certificate upon completion of each project block:

Block 1 – Weeks 1 to 5: Beyond the Metaverse
Led by 8billionideas, this will be a crash course in ideation, design, and future-focused thinking based on the emerging technology of the Metaverse. Pupils will work in groups to gain experience of the design thinking process, mocking up their ideas first before designing their final projects using 3D design software. We will judge their final 3D models as a competition.

Block 2 – Weeks 6 to 10: Arcade Game 101
We will learn about the fundamental elements that make up simple Arcade Games from the point of view of both coding and gameplay. Participants will work in groups and will experience block-based coding, Javascript and Python depending on their levels of experience. There will be minimal teaching and maximum doing – participants will need to be willing to problem-solve and deal with setbacks to succeed!
