The Careers Programme for Years 10-12 kicked off this year with some fascinating and enlightening talks to broaden students’ thoughts about the future.

Alleyn’s parent Laurent Kretzschmar who is Commercial and Product Director at Opia with a background in consulting and telecommunications, enlightened a Great Hall audience on his ‘accidental career.’ He reassured pupils that it is ok to not know what you want to do. The worst question ever to be asked, he said, was ‘Where do you see yourself in five years' time?’ The question used to make him melt inside. He encouraged students to always try their best, give everything a go and to never doubt if you can do something.

In the Pavillion, Principal Dentist, Dr Gauri Mohile, who is also an Alleyn’s parent talked about her journey into healthcare and dentistry and the route she eventually took to convert a Chinese takeaway shop into her own dental practice.

For pupils with an interest in the creative industries, alumna Chloë Meade (Dutton's 2014) who is a freelance Classical Musician, gave a fascinating account of her career journey. She gave tips for musicians to break into new routes of paid work such as teaching, and she encouraged our young musicians to network as much as possible.

The final talk was from parent, Dominic Minghella, who is a writer and producer and co-founder of Island Pictures and who wrote and created TV hit Doc Martin. He captivated a packed MCT audience of pupils with his career journey and offered a lot of advice to pupils on breaking into the industry, including the importance of training (both formal and self-training), tenacity and luck, just as much as talent.

Thank you so much to all of the speakers. We are so grateful for your time and wisdom on a fascinating set of careers which will no doubt pique the interest of our students as they think about their own futures.
