Volunteering begins in Year 10, and when volunteers reach Year 12 they have the opportunity to visit the residents of The Elms care home in Dulwich as one of their options. The visits, which take place on Thursdays between 4pm and 5pm, give the generations a chance to spend time together for a good chat. Students and residents also take part in activities together, such as water painting, talking about old photographs, playing dominos, cooking or having a sing-along.

Visits haven’t been possible recently but this hasn’t stopped our Year 12 students from keeping in touch. At the beginning of this year they came up with the idea of making bunting and writing cards and letters to the friends they have made, including cards which will arrive in time for Valentine’s Day. Alleyn’s staff then print what the students send to them digitally, and send them to the Elms so that the Elms residents can receive physical copies of what Alleyn’s students have made for them.

Year 12 students are very much looking forward to being able to go back the Elms but until they can meet again they plan to stay in touch, letting the residents know that they are thinking about them.
