The Alleyn's community had the pleasure of (virtually) meeting triple Olympian rower, international diplomat and successful author Cath Bishop, on 10 February for the latest in the Alleyn’s Sport Lockdown Speaker Series. Year 13 student, Philippa, led the interview, exploring the fascinating themes in Cath's new book: The Long Win.

Cath spoke about her interesting journey through the worlds of sport, politics, business and writing and discussed how the '3 Cs' can help all of us in our everyday lives: Clarity of what matters (how can we make each day a good day?), Constant learning mindset (to keep improving whether we win or lose), and Connections (success is not a solo venture).

She also explored the idea that success is much broader than the result of a fixture or being selected for a team. She emphasised to our pupils the importance of mindset and attitude, and of prioritising process over outcome. And she discussed current circumstances due to Covid-19 and lockdown, emphasising the importance of trying not to think too much about the uncertainties we cannot control and instead focus on the things within our control - and to do those well each day.

The event was attended by 80 pupils from Year 4 through to Year 13, many of whom seized the opportunity to ask Cath their own questions.

Following the event, one Year 9 pupil said: “Thank you for such an inspirational talk, I have learnt that you always have something to take away from a game whether you win or lose.”

We would like to thank Cath and all those who attended for another inspirational week of sharing ideas. To learn more about Cath and her inspirational philosophy, find out more here.
