Every year at this time Alleyn’ has the honour of welcoming the Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers to visit School and meet with the Year 10 Scholars over tea and cake in the Head’s Study. This year, this important event could not take place in School, so rather than postpone it, the tea was recreated in everyone’s homes and Mrs Lunnon’s guests met as usual only virtually.

Cream teas were delivered to all the guests in their homes, which maintained the sense of tradition to the occasion as well as being a lovely treat. The Prime Warden, Mr Nicholas Mason and his partner Lesley, the Clerk to the Saddlers’ Company, Brigadier Philip Napier and PA to the Clerk, Luisa Cioffi, joined Mrs Lunnon, Mr Turner, Mrs Joel and the scholars, and everyone had a chance to chat about their studies and school life in lockdown while they enjoyed their cream tea.

Since 1971 over 300 Saddlers’ scholars have passed through the gates of Alleyn’s, and the School’s association with the worshipful company of Saddlers remains as important and as relevant as it has ever been. The company has had a transformative impact on both the School and the scholars, who are chosen from the successful 11+ cohort each year by the Head, and there is a great deal of pride attached to being a Saddlers’ scholar.

After the event Brigadier Napier said:

‘Yesterday's gathering with Jane, Stuart, Mel and your Year 10 Saddlers’ Scholars was an ideal opportunity to catch up with all the goings on at Alleyn’s and to hear how your pupils had been coping in lockdown. We are very grateful. The Cornish Cream Tea also went down an absolute treat! Please would you pass on my sincere thanks to all concerned and wish them good fortune with their studies.’
