As part of their half-term activities, Year 7 and Year 10 Alleyn’s pupils spent the day with volunteer charity 'Sleep Pod' as part of the school’s commitment to community outreach work.

These silver Pods, made from reflective foil, are designed to provide a safe, warm space and protection from the elements for those in need. The smart design reduces heat loss in a person’s body, which would otherwise occur due to thermal radiation. Instead, body heat is reflected back, inside the Pod.

Pupils followed instructions on large boards to construct the Pods which take on a long triangular shape, just large enough to comfortably fit one sleeping person. The process is organised into eight stages, and the pupils worked collaboratively, following the instructions closely to construct the Pods from scratch.

The success of the Sleep Pod programme relies on the generosity of volunteers across the country giving their time, so Alleyn’s is proud to be a part of this effort.

Ben Jones, Director of Partnerships says “It’s also a nice way for the pupils to celebrate after finishing their summer exams, to take some time away from the classroom and use it to give back to the community in a meaningful way.”
