On Thursday, Year 12 teams Helios and Orion took part in the regional CanSat launch. The competition is a brilliant opportunity for students to make a satellite in a can which they launched with great success.

Rachel from Team Orion gives her take on the day:

Upon arriving at the site, all the teams were focused and hard at work, troubleshooting and editing their CanSat, so all the sensors and impact zones were working. Though stress levels were high, the teams collaborated together, straightening out code, hardware and even the can themselves. We had a great opportunity to meet other CanSat teams and discuss the project. Launching our satellite was a nerve-wracking affair, but we were able to defeat the odds in the face of adversity (our parachute not deploying but our can staying intact as it free-fell towards the ground from 237 metres high!) and were able to collect successful data. We learnt some very insightful information from this trip and although we have a lot of work to do in preparing for the UK Finals, we believe we can use this experience to improve our can to be the best it "can" be. Relive the day by viewing a slow-motion video of our launch here.
