Alleyn's has a rich and accomplished tradition of chamber music and latterly a strong association with performances at Blackheath Halls.  This year was the 11th Chamber Music Concert at the prestigious venue, with the event newly renamed in honour and grateful recognition of the work of Lord Higgins (Dutton's 1946) in leading and promoting the W.J. Smith Trust at Alleyn's. The trust was established by Alleyn's alumnus, composer and conductor Jack Lanchbery (Roper's 1942), in memory of former Director of Music W.J. Smith, with the purpose of enabling musically gifted children to access an Alleyn's education.

As part of the evening Lord Higgins mingled with performers and was presented with a token of the School's appreciation by Head Jane Lunnon, who said: "Lord Higgins' efforts in stewarding the trust have been invaluable, helping to provide transformational opportunities to talented children. We are simply delighted that each year we will recognise his work and remember Jack Lanchbery and W.J. Smith."

Ms Jo Doley, Head of Strings, commented that the twelve chamber ensembles involved 'gave a superb performance in the Lord Higgins Chamber Music Concert at Blackheath Halls. This was the culmination of a wonderful musical journey our chamber musicians have been following for the last two terms. With early morning rehearsals, masterclasses and a lengthy Lunchtime Concert Series providing pupils with the opportunity to explore and develop their passion for chamber music, Wednesday evening was a triumph. Wonderful performances, a marvellous audience and a great sense of achievement for all involved, with one Y9 pupil reporting “it was a lot of fun and a great experience”.

Lord Higgins has been an Olympian and an MP as well as an Alleyn's pupil, parent, governor and Chair of the W.J. Smith Trust. He was accompanied at the event by his wife Rosalyn, his brother and former School Captain Brian Higgins (Dutton's 1950), and his daughter Madeline Campbell (Dutton's 1986) who is also a former School Captain and current governor sitting on the Alleyn's Education Committee.

The Head added: "What an astonishing concert it was. That will live long in the memory. It was a real honour to have Lord Higgins and his family with us for it. Thank you to all our Alleyn's Music performers and staff for an amazing evening."
