On Wednesday 22 March, Year 12 Drama students saw world-renowned company, Complicité, return to the stage with a brilliant production of Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead at The Barbican.

This brand-new production is based on the Nobel prize-winning writer Olga Tokarczuk’s darkly comic acclaimed novel, which was shortlisted for the 2019 International Booker Prize. Olivier Award-winning actress Kathryn Hunter played protagonist Janina Duszejko in this ensemble cast, directed by Simon McBurney.

The study of live theatre is a core element of the A level Drama course and each year, the Drama Department aims to take the students to see a range of different styles of show to offer maximum choice in the written examination and to inspire practical work.

This thought-provoking production about the cosmos, poetry and the limitations and possibilities of activism, promised to be richly rewarding and of great educational value and did not disappoint.

Director of Drama at Alleyn’s, Jeremy Piper, described it as:

“Devised theatre at its most ingenious, daring and powerful. Inspirational as ever.”
