Alleyn’s Chair of Science, Dr Moore kicked off British Science Week, which this year is all about connections, by explaining why Piggy’s glasses could not have been used to light the beacon in Lord of the Flies because the character, Piggy is short-sighted and glasses for myopia don’t focus light but spread it.

Dr Moore went on to explain how interconnected all the science disciplines are with physics, chemistry and biology all playing their part in enabling our eyes to carry out the job of sight.

Impressively, he also made the whole school see a pink elephant by staring at a green elephant on screen for 14 seconds.

Finally, Dr Moore announced, followed by much applause, the much-anticipated results to last week’s cracking-good Inter-house egg-drop challenge.

Winner: Cribbs

2nd: Brading’s

3rd: Spurgeon’s
