Art Foundation - Emily Harris (Cribb’s 2022)

Many thanks to Emily Harris (Cribb’s 2022) for returning to speak to current Alleyn’s artists about the one-year Art Foundation course at Kingston University.

Emily outlined the four specialisms offered at Kingston: Fashion, Fine Art, 3D Design and Visual Communications. She had always assumed that she would follow the Fine Art route and that the Foundation year would enable her to ‘get art out of her system’ before she started an English degree course.  However, she has been surprised to discover a passion for the 3D design component and is now considering an Interior Design degree.  So, her advice is to keep an open mind! Emily prepared some wonderful slides showing the projects she has been involved in this term including a giant scrubbing brush with spaghetti ‘bristles’ and the results of a week-long project to design a shelter for tiger conservationists in Siberia!

Emily described the intensity of the Foundation course - being immersed in art all day, working at a faster pace and learning new techniques.  Emily has really enjoyed the collaborative working style and the ‘crit’ sessions with tutors and other students.  These have been really useful in building confidence to talk about her work and develop it through constructive questions and discussion.
