On the afternoon of Tuesday 22 March, the Spanish Department took all students to the Teatro Cervantes in Southwark to see a production of Federico García Lorca’s tragic play ‘La Casa de Bernada Alba’. The acting was superb, and the play was performed in Spanish, by native speakers, in an engaging and intimate setting.

In Year 13, all students study ‘Bodas de Sangre’, which, together with ‘La Casa de Bernada Alba’, forms part of Lorca’s most renowned trilogy. Much of the language, themes, characters and symbolism overlap within these works, making this a hugely beneficial and enriching experience for all who attended. In the conversation sessions this week, our foreign language assistant, Enara, has spent time unpicking the context and main ideas that emerge from this piece.

“El teatro es poesía que sale del libro para hacerse humana.”

Federico García Lorca
