On Wednesday 9 March, Year 12s Gabriella and Sally gave a lunchtime talk on women and sport as part of the International Women's Day 2022 celebration at Alleyn's.
They spoke primarily about elite sports such as club and international women's football and basketball, highlighting the disparities that exist across the board from pay, media coverage, kit and uniform regulations and mental health. They also touched on the professionals around elite sports such as coaches, therapists and board members where women make up a disproportionately small percentage within their respective areas.
Finally, Gabriella and Sally spoke about Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya and the controversy around her testosterone levels, questioning the perception and definition of the female body and the idea of femininity.
They concluded that overall there have been positive steps in the sports world to close gender gaps but there is an imperative to keep raising awareness of the inequalities in sports and to challenge the systems that perpetuate them.
Thank you Gabriella and Sally for an incredibly interesting talk.
