At the end of a busy first week, Year 7s settled along the pews at Christ’s Chapel, Dulwich Village for the Matriculation Service on Friday 10 September, marking the start of their Alleyn’s life.
Led by Chaplain Liz Lander, the service began with the hymn ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’. In connecting the brightness of the years ahead with the richness of the school’s history, Mrs Lunnon urged pupils to be optimistic and creative like the school’s founder Edward Alleyn, adding, “You won’t all be actors in your time at this school, although I hope many of you will give that a go, but I like to think you will all, in your own way, channel some of the imagination, spirit and enterprising energy of Edward Alleyn, in the years ahead”.
Head of Lower School Mrs Thornton encouraged kindness and respect and to always persevere. She reassured Year 7s that they will one day look back and reflect on their successes and remember the challenges they overcame. She concluded with a poem by Eben E. Rexford titled ‘The Best We Can’.
After hearing from School Captain Matilda Juty-Tabram, who shared her experiences at the school, each pupil was presented with a cornflower, Edward Alleyn’s favourite flower, to wear on their uniforms as they set off out of the chapel and on their own Alleyn’s journey.
Parents will be able to enjoy a recording and photos from the Service on the Hub from early next week.
