Year 3 visited Horton Kirby which lies on the River Darent in Kent as part of their humanities curriculum. They began the day by considering the local landscape and how it has changed in the last 100 or so years and why the River Darent was so important for the area. Data was collected on the river, including measuring the depths and widths at various points and how they vary. The excitement reached fever-pitch as the children entered the river, using rubber ducks to measure the velocity of the flow. One group up-stream had an escapee, and a few pairs of socks became rather waterlogged as the children soon discovered that their boots were not quite tall enough.  Back at the Horton Kirby centre they considered how different rocks can be permeable or impermeable and carried out an investigation to find examples of both amongst the rock samples. The children all listened attentively and learned a lot about the river, and we were commended by the centre staff as being the best school for recycling the remains of their lunches. Well done Year 3!
