The UK Mathematics Trust's Junior Maths Challenge has been taking place this week, with 302 Alleyn’s Lower School pupils participating online.

The Junior Maths Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice, problem-solving competition, aimed at pupils from across the UK, and it is designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

It will be a few weeks before we find out how many of our pupils will score in the top 40% and receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate, and how many will be among the high performers invited to take part in the Junior Olympiad, but whatever the results might be, the main value of the Junior Maths Challenge lies in the experience it offers Lower School pupils. Mathematics teacher Ms Green, who is responsible for the Math Challenge, said:

‘The Junior Maths Challenge gives pupils the opportunity to approach maths problems differently, encouraging them to think outside the box’.
