The Economics Society at Alleyn’s was delighted to welcome Martin Cox, Director of the John Locke Institute, to deliver a virtual lunchtime talk last week.
Speaking via Teams to students across the year groups socially distanced in locations around the school, Martin’s talk considered the solution to poverty. Entitled ‘How to End Poverty’, Martin asked whether how we spend our money is more critical than how much we spend, and explored challenges including that of connecting low-income economies to global markets.
Head of Economics at Alleyn’s, Andrew Robertson, said, “We are incredibly grateful to Martin for sharing his time and delivering a stimulating talk that touched on so many fascinating areas including international aid, free trade and the reform of institutions. It was wonderful to be joined by so many partner schools and to hear lots of thoughtful questions from the students challenging the free market position.”
The talk was organised in conjunction with the Southwark Schools Learning Partnership (SSLP), a unique collaboration of independent and state schools based in and around the London Borough of Southwark.
Around 200 students from SSLP schools attended the virtual talk, including from Charter North Dulwich, St Thomas the Apostle College, JAGS, St Saviour’s & St Olave’s School, the Elmgreen School and the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham (of which Alleyn’s is a supporter). Partner schools who were unable to attend at the time will access a recording of the talk.
The partner schools commit to sharing ideas, resources and facilities and to learning from each other as equal partners. Each academic year Alleyn’s hosts a range of events as part of its SSLP membership.
The John Locke Institute is an independent educational organisation named in honour of the seventeenth century Oxford philosopher. It works to embolden students ‘to become more academically ambitious and more intellectually adventurous’.
Junior School Open Day
The next Alleyn's Junior School Open Event is from 1.30pm to 3pm on Wednesday 22 May 2024. There will be a Head's Talk at 1.40pm after which you will be offered a tour of the school with a pupil. There is no need to book a place at this Open Event - everyone is welcome.
