Alleyn's School was graced by the virtuoso talents of acclaimed cellist Natalie Clein in two captivating events that unfolded on Monday. Clein, an alumna of the Royal College of Music, clinched both the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award and the Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians. Since her debut concerto at the Proms in 1997, Clein has established herself as a fixture on prestigious stages, captivating audiences with her mastery of the cello.
The first highlight of the day was a transformative cello masterclass led by Natalie, where pupils had the opportunity to bask in her musical prowess. Clein shared insights and refined techniques, offering pupils a glimpse into the world of professional cello playing. The session was a deep dive into the intricacies of cello craft, with pupils acquiring 'tricks of the trade' from a professional in the field.
Artistic Director of the Series, Jonathan Beatty, reflects:
‘Natalie's wonderful masterclass gave us a privileged insight into the processes and graft that have gone into her own playing, and the virtuosity, passion and intensity of her evening programme of solo cello music left the capacity audience spell-bound.’
In the evening, the Alleyn's community reveled in a sold-out Clein concert, marking the commencement of the 2023/24 season of the Dulwich Concert Series.
Clein's performance showcased a riveting program, featuring works by the likes of Bach and Kodály, leaving the audience in awe of her artistry. The Dulwich Concert Series has a tradition of providing a platform for exceptional musicians to captivate audiences in an atmosphere that fosters a deep appreciation for the art form, and we are thrilled to have Natalie Clein add to this musical legacy.
