In a passionate and wide-ranging talk as part of the latest IDEAS@Alleyn’s series, The Rt Hon. Prof the Lord Kakkar (Roper’s 1982) set out the importance of building on the Alleyn’s ROCCK values in striving for the success and harmony of society.

Drawing on his time at Alleyn’s, as both a pupil and a Governor, and his experience as a leading physician and in the House of Lords, Lord Kakkar advocated strongly for the sanctity and stability of our governing institutions and their importance in maintaining the delicate balance of democracy.

Speaking about how our democracy is shaped by the institutions that make it up, Lord Kakkar shone a light on the role of our education system and our health service in promoting health, success and prosperity of British society as well as enshrining a fundamental equality for all citizens of the UK. He warned against the consequences of reform for reform’s sake, explaining that the overhaul of longstanding institutions such as the House of Lords would have knock-on consequences threatening the sovereignty of the House of Commons and, ultimately, the people.

Addressing a packed Great Hall audience of students, alumni, staff and former staff, including current and former Chairs of Governors, President of the Edward Alleyn Club (EAC) and his contemporary in the House of Lords, Lord Higgins (Dutton’s 1946), Lord Kakkar spoke with incredible warmth about his time at Alleyn’s, and how his experience here shaped a value structure and interests that were instrumental in his career later in life.

Asked by an Alleyn’s pupil what advice he would give to current pupils he said, “at Alleyn’s the most important thing I did was to throw myself into life at the school”, and that the breadth of experiences he enjoyed and opportunity to try everything underpins the social values he holds true today.

We are incredibly grateful to Lord Kakkar for returning to Alleyn’s and for giving back to his School so generously. He has been Chair of Governors, an Alleyn’s parent and President of our alumni community, the EAC. He is a brilliant example of how involved our alumni remain with the School and we are grateful for his continued support.
