Senior School News

On October 9th, 2024, our pupils joined athletes, coaches, and environmental advocates at Hackney Marshes to take part in the national Save Our Grassroots campaign. Led by the climate organisation Re-writing Earth, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the growing threat of climate change to grassroots sports and green spaces, while advocating for action to protect them.

This project has drawn participation from retired and current professional athletes, including members of the England women’s football team. Pupils from both the Junior and Senior Schools gathered at Hackney Marshes to raise their voices, play some football, and celebrate the spirit of community that sport fosters. Through matches, interviews, and personal stories, they made it clear that saving green spaces isn’t just about sport—it’s about mental health, inclusion, and preserving a better future for all.

The Impact of Climate Change on Grassroots Sports

Grassroots sports are at risk, with over 120,000 games cancelled annually due to extreme weather. As climate patterns become more unpredictable, community sports suffer, along with the mental health and well-being of participants. Protecting green spaces is crucial for maintaining the physical, social, and emotional benefits they provide to young people and communities.

A Day of Action and Fun

At Hackney Marshes, Alleyn’s pupils from both Junior and Senior Schools played football alongside professional athletes and celebrities, bringing community spirit to life. Highlights included:

  • Friendly matches showcasing teamwork and fun.
  • A playful “footy in wellies” match featuring Paul Merson.
  • Interviews with pupils, athletes, and coaches discussing the connection between sports, green spaces, and mental health.

“These spaces are where we build friendships and grow as individuals. Losing them would mean losing more than just a place to play,” said one pupil.

Campaign Success and How You Can Join

The campaign has already made a huge impact, trending on X/Twitter and reaching 30 million people. Coverage from Match of the Day, ITV, and the Daily Mail further boosted its visibility. Launch videos featuring Gary Lineker, Paula Radcliffe, and Ashley Cole added momentum to the movement.

The Future of Save Our Grassroots
