On Tuesday evening, Alleyn’s School proudly launched the Alleyn’s Science Academy, marking the beginning of an inspiring journey for 60 Year 12 pupils from both Alleyn’s and local partner schools. These pupils gathered to commence their work towards the prestigious Gold CREST Awards, a national recognition for excellence in scientific research and innovation.

The evening began with presentations from Year 13 students, who shared insights from their own Gold CREST projects, offering a glimpse into the diverse and ambitious topics that had earned them recognition. Their work spanned various fields, from medical research to technology, giving the new Year 12 cohort a wealth of ideas to draw from.

Following these presentations, the Year 12 students teamed up to begin brainstorming and planning their own research projects. This year's topics promise to be as diverse and thought-provoking as ever. Among them are:

  • How does the management of the quality of life of a patient change as dementia progresses? – an investigation into the medical and ethical challenges of caring for dementia patients.
  • The effect of social media on the development of adolescents – exploring the psychological and social impacts of digital platforms on young people.
  • Investigations into the antimicrobial properties of UK plants – research into the potential use of native plant species in combating microbial infections.

These topics not only reflect the students' wide-ranging interests but also address some of the most pressing issues in science and society.
