Year 8 pupils today took part in a vibrant and engaging programme of activities, all focused on the diverse and colourful culture of India. The aim of the day was to deepen their understanding of various Indian customs, festivals, and leisure activities, as well as the spiritual and philosophical elements that shape Indian society and religion. Much like how pupils explore different civilisations and religions through their regular curriculum, today offered them an opportunity to expand their cultural awareness and connect with the diverse communities in our increasingly globalised world.

The theme for today’s event was inspired by the Holi Festival, which was celebrated this year last Friday 14th March. Holi, a Hindu festival of colours, love, and the arrival of spring, celebrates the victory of good over evil. Throughout the day, pupils participated in a series of workshops that showcased India’s rich cultural heritage, including Bollywood dance, Diya lamp painting, and a special session focused on Holi. Pupils also enjoyed an Indian-inspired lunch menu and listened to a Hindi playlist, offering a taste of Indian pop music.

In the afternoon, pupils were treated to the British-Asian sports comedy-drama ‘Bend It Like Beckham’. The film, introduced by our amazing Head of Film Studies, Mr. Grogan, explores the story of Jess Bhamra, a young British-Indian girl torn between her passion for football and her family's traditional expectations. Mr. Grogan’s introduction covered several key themes, including the story behind the film, multiculturalism and identity, and why the film was ground-breaking at the time of its release. He also guided the pupils on viewing with awareness, highlighting why the film continues to resonate with audiences today, addressing issues of cultural conflict, gender roles, and the pursuit of individual dreams. With its timeless message, ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ offered a thought-provoking and inspiring conclusion to the day’s activities.
