Yesterday afternoon, we took an exciting step in fostering a coaching culture as Deputy Head (Pastoral), Mr English, and Director of Coaching & Leadership, Mr Lewis, delivered our first Graydin coaching course to students. The “Be Curious” workshop, held in the Pavilion, introduced students to the fundamentals of coaching and the power of a partnership-driven approach to conversation.
The session explored what coaching is, how it differs from mentoring and therapeutic models, and the importance of purposeful collaboration. Discussions centred on the contrast between partnership-based leadership and hierarchical structures, emphasising how clear intent from all parties is essential for supporting the coachee, while also enabling growth for the coach. Participants noted that, although friction can exist in partnerships, it can also drive growth and innovation.
Students actively engaged in thought-provoking conversation, particularly around how a non-directive approach, such as coaching, allows individuals to find their own answers and set their own direction. There were several questions aimed at defining what coaching is—and what it is not. Facilitators clarified that coaching is not about providing answers or directing someone toward a specific outcome, but rather about empowering individuals to develop their own insights and solutions.
In coaching, we believe the coachee has the answers and that they are whole. We do not seek to steer, guide, or ‘fix’; instead, as coaches, we listen deliberately and ask questions to illuminate possibilities, plant seeds, or hold up a mirror to support our coachees.
Through interactive exercises, including effective questioning techniques and active listening, students gained insights into how coaching can enhance communication, critical thinking, and community support. As this was only the first session in the series, students left eager to explore coaching further in their next workshop.
