This week, we have been marking Children’s Mental Health Week with a range of activities focused on awareness, identity, and mental wellbeing. Organised by Mr Paul Koloi, who runs The Well, and supported by Mr Gavin English, Deputy Head Pastoral, the events encouraged students to reflect on self-expression and emotional resilience.
The week kicked off with a photo booth and live music to raise money for YoungMinds, with pupils and staff accessorising in yellow to show support. An Open Mic session featured a variety of performances, from poetry readings to full band music.
Tuesday saw pupils gathering around a pizza oven to make s’mores in the Well Garden, fostering a sense of community, while MSU’s World Teas event offered a moment of cultural appreciation and relaxation. On Wednesday, a DJ session in the Quad, led by two Year 12 pupils and finished by a Year 7 pupils, brought energy and fun to the midweek, demonstrating the uplifting power of music.
As the week continued, a Dance Workshop encouraged students to express themselves through movement, and the Minority Students Union’s Multicultural Week celebration culminated in the annual Multicultural Fashion Show on Friday, providing a vibrant celebration of individuality and self-expression. Throughout the week, discussions and mindfulness activities reinforced the importance of mental wellbeing and self-care.
Mr Paul Koloi and The Well team, reflecting on the week’s impact, shared: “This week has truly shown the power of community and self-expression in supporting mental wellbeing. From music and dance to shared meals and mindfulness, every event was a reminder that looking after yourself is the first step to looking after others. We are so grateful to all the pupils and staff who participated, performed, and made this week so special. Your energy, kindness, and enthusiasm made all the difference.”
Mr Gavin English also emphasised the importance of prioritising mental health in schools, stating: "Wellbeing and supporting young people with their mental health have always been top priorities for schools. It’s not just about the labels or titles we use - what matters most is ensuring that every child feels good about themselves and has the support they need to thrive, that school provides opportunities for them to play a part in a community in any number of ways. This week has reinforced the importance of continuing that work in a meaningful, FUN and engaging way."
Children’s Mental Health Week at Alleyn’s has been a resounding success, reminding pupils of the importance of self-care, support networks, making sure they find time to unwind, and celebrating identity.
