Forty-five Year 12 students visited Charter North to hear Kate Raworth discuss Doughnut Economics with Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership Economists. Dressed as a ringmaster, she engaged students and teachers on stage, offering insights into how the UK can address global challenges.
Anouck, a Year 12 student, shares her experience:
Kate Raworth was an engaging and intellectual speaker who clearly explained her principle of Doughnut Economics, which provides a framework for sustainable development focusing on environmental and social goals. She also discussed green growth and de-growth. I thought she made interesting points, particularly about the need for no growth or de-growth in order to reach net-zero goals in the UK. Although she talked about achieving growth at the same time as a reduction in carbon emissions, she seemed to be in support of prioritising environmental goals over economic growth, which was an interesting point of view. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the talk as it was a valuable experience to gain an insight into alternative methods of running an economy.
