On Wednesday evening, the MCT burst into glorious life with the opening night of Alleyn’s much-anticipated Upper School Musical Legally Blonde. This was a brilliant example of the magical synergy of theatre: the drama of the iconic story of Elle Woods’ journey from sorority president to Harvard Law legal legend brought to life with passion, nuance and bravery; complex choreography which saw the entire company of 47 showcase dance styles from commercial, through to cheerleading and Irish dancing; and a musical score that swept quickly and deftly across a litany of genres – from reggae, to Celtic to rock pop - all underlined by complex harmonies, and a powerful musicianship by the onstage band.
Isabella, as Elle Woods, led the cast with sincerity, elegance and commitment, from the stylish opening number, Omigod You Guys, to the sheer energy of the heroic Bend and Snap, whilst at the same time bringing a heartwarming empathy to her developing relationship with Emmet – played brilliantly by Gabriel. Lola, as Paulette, brought a moment of magic with spinetingling singing in Ireland and Eddie as Callahan, drama and menace in Blood in the Water. The ensemble, perfectly together in harmony and enthusiastically in time over an eye-watering range of styles, brought energy and joy whether they were singing whilst skipping, wielding pompoms, or (during the thrilling denouement of the court room finale) arguing in song.
The MCT set was versatile but simple, in tones of white and pink – and judicious deployment of neon - and featuring first class comic book artwork by Poppy, Sam, Sophia, Zainab and Richard; whilst the band, positioned on stage for the entire show, brought a jazz-like panache and versatility alongside a feeling of intimacy that drew the audience into the action.
Received enthusiastically and with a lot of laughter by a capacity audience, the opening night of Legally Blonde was an emotional and thoroughly enjoyed first class production which, brilliantly, had the stamp of Alleyn’s and All We Can Be running right through it. A testament to the talent and sheer will power of every person involved – on stage and behind the scenes - and a work of stylish genius and dedication by the dream team: Director Mr Piper, Choreographer Mrs Demain and Music Director Mrs Wynter.
OMIGOD YOU GUYS, bring on the next two performances!
