A few weeks ago, all Alleyn’s and SSLP Economics A level students were asked to do some extra-curricular work outside of the economics curriculum.

This entailed digitally attending the Financial Times Weekend Festival on Saturday 3rd September and viewing three talks.

We asked two Alleyn’s students what their favourite talks were:

Maya (13BnCR) said:

“My favourite talk was the one on over tourism as it explored the difference between good and bad tourism. Bad tourism tends to be a lot cheaper: going to a hot country just to tank some sun, sitting around and not really doing anything to contribute to the economy of that other country. Good tourism is when you go to another country to explore the culture there, spending money on the food and on different aspects of the country there.”

Naomi (13DuTn) said:

“My favourite talk was about why smart people believe silly things. This explored how smart people can be deceived in clever ways. For example I learned the term ‘biased assmilation’ which refers to how people, when they’re thinking about ideas, they choose to focus on different aspects they want to believe and ignore the aspects that aren’t relevant to them."
