Senior School pupils were captivated by a fascinating talk from Martin Forde KC, barrister, government advisor on the Windrush Compensation Scheme and leader of the Forde inquiry into antisemitism in the Labour Party in their PSHE session on Thursday 3 November.

Martin is a leading light of the legal profession and delivered an enthralling talk about why the political system continues to fail immigrants.

He talked about his own heritage and his parents’ journey to England in the 1950s, as well as his childhood and experience of education as the only black person in his class. With a talent for chemistry, Martin was encouraged by his school to work in the paint spray division of a nearby factory. These experiences motivated him even more to become a barrister in the 1980s, with particular interests in health law and human rights.

Speaking to the whole Senior School, Martin explained the background to Windrush scandal, the media manipulation of migration and the process he took to design a compensation scheme. He also discussed how he would like to see migration and the net contribution to the economy as well as an acknowledgement of black emperors and presidents through history taught in schools today.

Pupils and staff asked perceptive questions, including around whether the Windrush scheme had caused intergenerational trauma and where, if anywhere, Martin finds home? He talked about his sadness at not feeling he belongs anywhere - feeling like a tourist in the Caribbean and how his confidence has been shaken in the UK and the unsettling feeling that after all this time you might not be accepted.

Thank you to Martin for such a fascinating and insightful talk.
