Head of Alleyn's, Jane Lunnon today contributed to a Science and Technology committee session that was exploring how to improve the uptake of maths and physics by girls and other underrepresented groups in the UK.
The Committee was hearing from Mrs Lunnon in her capacity as Head of Alleyn's, alongside headteachers from a number of different schools as well as academic and industry experts.
Greg Clark MP chaired the Committee session, which took place at Westminster. Panellists included: Professor Dame Athene Donald, Master of Churchill College and Professor Emerita of Experimental Physics, University of Cambridge; Professor Ulrike Tillmann, President, London Mathematical Society; Dr Jasper Green, Her Majesty's Inspector, Schools and Subject Lead, Science, Ofsted Curriculum Unit; and Mark Turner, Headteacher, Skipton High School for Girls.
Witnesses discussed topics around the role that the education system has to play in addressing underrepresentation in STEM research and industry, for example through more diverse role models in the classroom, and earlier, more careers-focused input. Mrs Lunnon also called for a more diverse curriculum at A level, and also mentioned the exciting and developing use of VR to enhance the teaching of all subjects.
The session was broadcast live on Parliament TV, and you can watch the second session, which featured Mrs Lunnon, below.
