We were delighted to be joined by parents, pupils and colleagues alike to enjoy the work of our Year 9 artists in a private view for their 'Spaces of Transformation' project, as the EAB was transformed into an exhibition space in which visitors could enjoy the many physical and digital pieces at leisure.

Pupils have been working on the project since the beginning of the Advent term, each producing a sculptural/architectural mixed-meda model inspired by the work of contemporary architects, set designers and sculptors. You can view examples of their work on the Art Instagram account, here.

Head of Art and Art History, Sally Reynolds noted how "the pupils have responded to the theme in original and exciting ways, experimenting with a range of materials and processes to create playful three dimensional structures: some adhere to minimalist concepts of ‘truth to materials’ juxtaposing geometric forms derived from plaster casts of everyday packaging. For other students there is a play with colour and different textures, whilst many explore strong narratives and poignant imagery as their focus. Whether we conceive of these structures as sculptures, or maquettes for architectural pavilions or set designs, all are successful as intriguing three dimensional forms in their own right, as well as suggesting their potential to be developed on a larger scale within different contexts."

A further element to this project was a digital component whereby pupils experimented with the use of Procreate (a digital App on iPads) to create Gifs to animate their structures, conveying a sense of energy and the construction process. These digital, graphic works evoked futuristic moving images. Taking their 3d structures into the 2d realm in this way, allowed pupils to extend the imaginative possibilities of their work. Other components of the exhibition consisted of a film and A1 digital prints as further manifestations of the project.

The works in this exhibition transform space in bold ways and make radical propositions for reimagining our environment. Congratulations to all our young artists who took part!
