On Tuesday 9 November, twenty-three Alleyn's woodwind musicians took part in the 2021 Lizbeth Elliott Woodwind Prize. More than just a competition, the prize celebrated the incredible talents of our young players in a concert atmosphere and treated the audience to a fabulous evening of woodwind playing.

There was a wide range of instruments, repertoire and genres of music on display. The adjudicator, Thomas Hancox, co-principal flute of Britten Sinfonia, spoke with energy and enthusiasm, giving valuable insights and thoughts to all who played, and of course then had to make some difficult decisions at the end of it!

Well done and thank you to all who took part in this event - it was exciting to have live music and an audience back in the department!'

Lizbeth Elliott (1961-2013) was a much loved and highly valued member of the visiting music staff who taught the bassoon at Alleyn’s from 1999. She performed as principal bassoon with English Touring Opera and as a regular guest player with orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the Philharmonia and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as well as a number of chamber ensembles.
