More than 100 people tuned in to hear inspirational former student, Alex Garcev (Brading's 2000-07), discuss his fascinating career in the latest Alleyn’s Sport Lockdown Speaker Series session. Hosting the discussion, Year 8, Isy, interviewed Alex about his journey from Alleyn's Junior and Senior Schools, to ISFA England representative, US scholar and now lead Chelsea Football scout in Spain and Portugal. She introduced pupils who put insightful questions to Alex, from ‘how did you manage distractions when you moved to the US?’ to ‘have you always dreamt of being a football scout?’

Inspiring current pupils, Alex's key messages included the fact that when selecting footballers, talent makes up 50% of what he looks for, and he rates character and mentality above all. He also discussed how injury provided him with a huge redirection, which has ultimately led him to a career he loves.

It was heart-warming to hear Alex's memories of his time at Alleyn's and how it has set him up for later life:

“I have such fond memories of both the Junior and Senior School. Alleyn's developed my work ethic and desire to achieve. Looking back, I set myself a lot of personal goals throughout my time at school, and that is something that I have continued throughout my life.”

We look forward to next week’s lockdown speaker, triple Olympian South African Hockey player and Scotland international coach, Jen Wilson.
