On Monday over 40 Alleyn’s Economics students attended the Young Economists Conference at Dulwich College along with 9 other schools from the Southwark Schools' Learning Partnership. We were privileged to hear two fascinating talks.

The first, by Dr. James Smith, was on the excellent and extraordinary work of the Aegis Trust in its promotion of peace and development in Africa and the second, by Shabana Jamil of the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, was about how to create a market for hydrogen as an energy source when none exists.

The students were then mixed up into about 40 different teams of 5 and they were given some economic data and the manifestos of the three largest political parties from the last election.  Each team had an hour to research and present 3 economic policies that they would recommend to the audience.  Many Alleyn’s students made it through to the final four (interestingly it was mainly Liberal Democrat parties that made it to the final), and a team with three Alleyn’s students was democratically elected in an online vote by the audience of students.

Many congratulations to Aibhlin E, Penelope B and Alice M!  Our thanks goes to DC’s Economics Department for organising this excellent event.
