Alleyn's School transformed into a magical haven of melodies on Thursday night, as pupils, parents, and faculty gathered for a captivating Christmas Concert.
Over 200 of Alleyn's musicians came together in the MCT, assembling in ten different ensembles, with the performances of the evening unfolding in a delightful blend of tradition and innovation.
After an exciting show opener performance of themes from Harry Potter, Sinfonietta signalled the beginning of Christmas with a shimmering version of Walking In The Air. The pupils (all 58 of them!) thoroughly enjoyed performing and showing their friends and families why they disappear to the music department each Wednesday lunchtime!
From classical carols to modern interpretations of holiday favourites, highlights of the evening included catchy melodies of Pop Choir’s Love on Top and Bohemian Rhapsody, and the Clarinet Quintet's razzley rendition of Deck the Halls. The Swing Doctors relayed a captivating Hit the Road Jack and of course, Sleigh Ride by the Monsterphonics was a hit.
Theo Moran's Jazz Octet gave the night their all, rising above technical issues live on stage to deliver a fun performance.
'The concert was great fun, it was nice to watch such a huge range of groups and genres. The octet enjoyed our first opportunity to perform and we're all looking forward to the next one. Our guitarist had a tech issue while we were performing so we couldn't hear him, which caused havoc with our guitar-heavy arrangement and led to quite a bit of on-stage stress!
'I was impressed with the way everybody managed to hold it together, and the quality of the playing was really high, so we're all excited to return on Jazz Night in March with working instruments and some more fun arrangements.' - Theo, Year 13
The Christmas concert not only showcased our pupils' musical talents, but also reflected the fruits of our commitment to fostering a vibrant and enriching school environment. We are very humbled by the way music at Alleyn’s can so harmoniously unite, inspire, and spread joy.
Thanks to all performers, who left us feeling well and truly in the Christmas spirit.
Junior School Open Day
The next Alleyn's Junior School Open Event is from 1.30pm to 3pm on Wednesday 22 May 2024. There will be a Head's Talk at 1.40pm after which you will be offered a tour of the school with a pupil. There is no need to book a place at this Open Event - everyone is welcome.
