Alleyn’s School Lower School building has been awarded a Royal Institute of British Architects London Award 2019.
The Lower School building which was formally opened in May 2018 provides a state-of-the-art learning environment for our 300 Year 7 and 8 pupils. Designed by Tim Ronalds Architects, it houses 12 multi-use classrooms, a bright atrium and airy meeting spaces, offices and meeting rooms for small group work, and an outdoor space for play. The building provides pupils with the space and facilities to learn in a relaxed, enjoyable and purposeful atmosphere.
As well as being a functional learning environment, the building also has outstanding eco credentials with a sustainable and highly energy efficient design. Photovoltaic panels on the roof generate electricity for the building. The triangular design helps to reduce heat loss and allows good levels of natural daylight from large windows and roof lights. Low energy lighting is provided throughout, with daylight dimming and automatic switching to save energy. The School has an energy-efficient mechanical ventilation system and the rooms and building are airtight with excellent thermal insulation. In the bathrooms, water-efficient fittings and automatic isolation are used to minimise water use.
The landscaping around the Lower School is also designed to enhance ecology and attract wildlife. Planting is designed to improve biodiversity, and nesting boxes in the trees provide homes for breeding birds and bats. The playground paving is permeable, slowing the rainwater run-off into local watercourses and reducing the risk of flooding.
Junior School Open Day
The next Alleyn's Junior School Open Event is from 1.30pm to 3pm on Wednesday 22 May 2024. There will be a Head's Talk at 1.40pm after which you will be offered a tour of the school with a pupil. There is no need to book a place at this Open Event - everyone is welcome.
