Many of our Alleyn Old Boys remember the glider. Stefan Bort (D 1971-78) recalls that it was ‘faithfully dragged across the field each inspection day and “flown” across the cricket square for about 15 feet.’ In addition to basic aviation training for the RAF cadets, myth has it that in the 1950s some pupils assembled the glider overnight in the Great Hall prior to the next day’s final assembly.

The photograph shows the glider being piloted by Steven Whittaker (C 1962-69) at the Annual Inspection in June 1969. The glider was destroyed in the RAF hut fire in the early 1980s.
