Neil French (C 1954-61), Vice-President and Honorary Archivist, explains that ‘the first Badge of Office for the President was presented in 1937, to the Alleyn Old Boys’ Club by JVH Coates, a Vice-President of the Club and former Master at the School. Forty years later, at the end of his presidential year, JF Pretlove presented the Club with a new President’s badge. This later badge is inscribed Edward Alleyn Club – the change of name reflecting the fact that former pupils were now part of a co-educational school and not only Old Boys! The original badge has subsequently been provided with a bar to indicate its current use as the badge of office worn by the Deputy President of the Club.
