Alleyn’s was the focus of intense media interest during the May bank holiday in 2009, when one of the school’s pupils was confirmed to have contracted swine flu, an illness which was sweeping the world at the time. A huge effort by school staff and the health authorities meant that parents of all our pupils were contacted at the weekend and within 24 hours all our pupils had received medication to counteract the effects of the illness. Christina Hughes-Onslow, Chief Administrative Officer, helped with the manoeuvre to get parents in and recalls that ‘cartoonist Matt seized the opportunity for a joke on the front page of the Daily Telegraph the following morning: as a local, he knew exactly how to represent the school accurately in his drawing, belltower and all!’ Matt is the grandson of Alleyn Old Boy VS Pritchett (Bn 1914-16).
