Eco Week 2023: Navigating the Path to Sustainability at Alleyn's School

Alleyn's School is thrilled to announce the arrival of Eco Week 2023 which kicks into action on Monday. Running from 20-24th November 2023, it will be a week of inspiration, education, and action as we navigate deeper into our journey of sustainability.

Previously known as Sustainability Week, which has run for the last four years, Eco Week has undergone a recent renaming to align with JAGS and Dulwich College. The new title also better aligns with our pupil Eco Committee, led by our brilliant Eco Coordinators, Ann-Katrin and Jenny, who have all been hard at work planning and organising an array of Eco Week activities that will challenge and inspire. With their carefully curated lineup of activities, workshops, and talks incoming, we are gearing up to raise our sustainability mojo.

This year, we will be showcasing and celebrating the key initiatives we have implemented as we move toward a more sustainable school operation - which is considerable! Screens around the School will display facts and statistics that are in line with the School’s AllNow strategy.

Event highlights include the Ice Box Challenge for Year 7 pupils. Led by the School’s sustainability advisor, Architype, the challenge will be linked into next week's science lessons. Teams will be tasked with using an array of recycled and sustainable materials to insulate a block of ice, with teams judged on their ability to keep the ice block from melting. Winners of the challenge will be given the chance to visit one of Architype’s low energy Passivhaus buildings; an experience which will expand their understanding of energy saving measures.

Tuesday’s Investment Managers talk by Amy Browne, Sustainability Lead at CCLA is set to be a hit, with Amy speaking to staff and pupils about what it means to be a sustainable investor, and the pioneering work CCLA are doing with their Mental Health Benchmark.

On Thursday, staff will take part in the annual foundation school Clothes and Books swap, this year hosted at JAGS, and on Friday, the School plans to ‘power down’ - significantly reducing power usage and the number of printers and photocopiers online for use.

It’s going to be a busy week in the Alleyn’s eco-sphere, so, get ready to learn, change, and create a greener, more sustainable future.
