Development and Alumni

Wednesday, 12 June played host to our annual Alumni Cricket Reunion, and we were delighted to welcome back Alleyn’s alumni cricket fans from the Class of 1951 through to the Class of 1995 to Townley Road to reconnect and catch up.

The sun may not have been shining in typical June fashion, but, as Head Jane Lunnon reminded our guests when she warmly welcomed them, “we carry our sunshine within, here at Alleyn’s!”

Welcoming alumni as they arrived, she said:

“This wonderful event is a way to celebrate the history of our school and long-standing relationships. Looking round I can see lots of people who are long-standing friends of the School and who have helped and supported us in so many ways. Thank you for your friendship and your loyalty.”

She continued:

“We say to the kids - “Always Alleyn’s” - and that is how we feel. We never take it for granted that the relationships that are forged at school will last and the fact that it does happen, speaks so much about not just the community of the School but also about you and your commitment to us. Thank you for that and thank you for being here.”

The Alleyn’s Cricket Reunion has become an annual event in the calendar. As well as catching up with friends, alumni enjoyed watching Alleyn’s current cricketers in action against The Forty Club – one of the largest wandering cricket clubs in the world – in a tense match which saw the Alleyn’s side win off the last ball of the game!

The final result saw The Forty Club score 238 off 52 overs for 6 and Alleyn’s score 240 off 40 overs for 9, winning the game by one wicket! The success was a testament to the players and the development of cricket in recent years at Alleyn’s, which is taken up enthusiastically by boys and girls alike. Our girls U15 team have been undefeated this season with 10 wins, and they have made it to the Surrey Cup and the National finals.

Lunch was hosted by Ken Farrington (Tulley’s 1956), known for playing Billy Walker in Coronation Street for more than 20 years. A beautiful Grace was given by Richard Hampton (Roper's 1956) before alumni, current Alleyn’s cricketers and their parents enjoyed a delicious lunch and the chance to share cricketing tales, stories of life at and beyond Alleyn’s and to talk about Alleyn’s today. Guests heard from Mr Maskill, Head of Cricket, with an update on cricket at Alleyn's today, and received a humourous post-lunch surprise from Ken as he performed a witty ditty for all to enjoy.

Thank you to our cricketing alumni for returning for a fantastic reunion!
