The spirit of Alleyn’s fives was alive and thriving as alumni from across the decades reunited for the Alumni Fives Reunion. From the Class of 1967 to the Class of 2019, former players returned to the courts, ready to pass on their expertise and reconnect with the game they love.
The event kicked off with friendly competition, as many alumni donned their gloves to take on Alleyn’s current fives players, helping them sharpen their skills ahead of their upcoming national tournaments. Others enjoyed the chance to spectate from the sidelines of the John Pretlove (Cribb’s 1951) Fives Courts and reminisce about the sport that they fondly remember from their school days.
Adding to the excitement, we were honored to welcome back Hamish Buchanan (Tyson’s 1982), a British men’s senior national Fives champion, who has a court at Alleyn’s named in his honor. Also stepping onto the court once again was Reno Antoniades (Tulley’s 1984), President of the Edward Alleyn Club 2023-24, embracing the opportunity to don his gloves and get back in the game.
After an exhilarating morning of play, alumni and current players came together for a well-earned lunch and a chance to share memories and celebrate the legacy of fives at Alleyn’s. With a history dating back to 1905, when the sport was first recorded in the Edward Alleyn Magazine with a match against St Olave’s School, fives continues to hold a special place in the school’s athletic tradition.
A huge thank you to all our alumni who returned to support today’s players and keep the fives spirit alive. We look forward to seeing you on the courts for another reunion next year!
