A huge thank you to Dr Richard Pullinger (Brown’s 1980) for returning to Alleyn's to inspire students in Alleyn's BioMed Society.

The students, who all have an interest in Biology or Medicine, and are considering a career in this field, heard from Richard about his journey from Alleyn's to studying Biomedicine and later Medicine. He piqued the students interests with some of the adventures his career in Emergency Medicine has taken him on, from paediatrics in an orphanage in Belarus to a demanding role requiring quick-thinking as a ship's doctor, to managing multi traumas as a flying doctor in Western Australia as well as script writing for TV shows Holby City and Casualty.

He spoke honestly about medicine as profession which throws you in at the deep end, but Richard’s varied experiences highlighted the different and exciting routes that students can consider. And he impressed upon them the need to follow their interests.

He said:

“There is no ceiling to what can be done with biology and therapeutics in particular. Explore the world around you and enjoy the things that interest you. You’re loaded into the front end of a rocket and when you finish your A levels you’ll be ready to go. But you’ll see the acceleration as you start to take off. And this is just the beginning.”

Thank you, Richard. It was wonderful to see you back at Alleyn's for the first time since you left in 1980. Your journey was incredibly inspirational for Alleyn's budding biologists!
